“Mountain Landscape – Evening”

Artist: Jean Kubota Cassill
Year: 1973
Etching, aquatint, soft ground
Image size: 18.5 x 27.5 inches

I was born and raised among the mountains of Washington state but after living in the Midwest, starting with college, I was never interested in portraying the mountains. This print started on the back of a plate that was left with a scratched and bitten surface. Somehow a mountain emerged as I worked. Not only was it a mountain, but it had a strong resemblance to Mount Washington, which overlooks the tiny town where I grew up. One doesn’t question how an image develops — you just accept and work with what comes.
